Toxicogenomics - toxicology for the 21st Century

The wealth of knowledge derived from genome studies during the last two decades has led to the possibility of using in-vitro measurements of gene expression as a means of identifying and evaluating the impact of potentially toxic substances. Not only do these techniques offer a potential alternative to whole animal testing, they are also likely to generate more comprehensive data than such tests currently provide.

In collaboration with academic partners Invitron is investigating a novel approach to quantify gene expression through the direct measurement of mRNA in cell cultures exposed to putative toxins. The aim of this work is to generate a platform technology that will pave the way for a raft of quantitative assays that will remove or reduce the need for whole animal testing in areas such as pharmaceutical trials and toxicological assessment.
